Resources for JVers

Below are a list of links to summer-institute lectures that may aide first-year debaters in their transition to the Junior Varsity division. The main difference of the JV division is that there is no limitation of argument type or what evidence may be used.

Cross-Ex Skills (The Best Lecture! – ENDI)

Debating Topicality (ENDI)

The Politics Disadvantage (GTown)

New Skills – JV
Counterplan Theory (Gtown)

Debating Theory (Gtown)

Debating Kritiks (Gtown)

Topicality Framework/Comp Interps vs. Reasonability (CNDI)

Lecture of the Week –> Turkey

The final lecture that will be posted here will be a lecture on the Turkey area of the debate topic. This is from Kevin Kallmeyer from the Georgetown Debate Seminar.

The lecture is in two parts, first explaining the history of Turkey then discussing possible affirmatives on the area.

Lecture of the Week –> Debating Topicality; Blog + Website Update

The lecture this week is on “Debating Topicality” and is given by Seth Gannon at the Georgetown Debate Seminar. This week’s lecture is below:

**************

Blog Update:

  • There will be one final ‘Lecture of the Week’ next week
  • Tournament Previews which used to be issued a few days before almost every tournament will occur less this year. Only for major tournaments will there be a preview, to explain the complex nature of State Championships or TOC-bid tournaments

Website Update:

  • The website will add a tab for the Alpharetta Debate Tournament that will occur on January 15, 2011. This will provide information to other teams who wish to participate, contact information, and the results packet once the tournament concludes.
  • The Twitter feed remains to update parents on the status of teams at tournaments throughout the year
  • The list of team members (About Us section) will add more people and change the division to ’4th year debaters, 3rd year, etc.’
  • The achievements section will try to link to results packets when possible
  • The front page of the website will itself undergo re-construction in the near future

Lecture of the Week –> Ethos in Debate

This is a lecture on Ethos in Debate. Ethos is hard to define but can be explained as one’s personality, outward expression, swag (as Ed Lee describes it), as well as credibility. This is a 50-minute lecture from Seth Gannon from the Georgetown Debate Seminar. It is a great lecture to watch if you are interested in getting Speaker Awards.

He also talks about the 10 Differences between Judges and Debaters.

Lecture is here: http://georgetowndebateseminar.wikispaces.com/Ethos+in+Debate+-+Seth+Gannon

Lecture of the Week –> CX

Here is a lecture about Cross-Examination from Melissa Wade at the Emory National Debate Institute. She always gives great advice and her lectures are very engaging and informative.

In my opinion, this is one of the best (if not the best) lecture this summer.

Here it is – just click the link

Bonus Lecture of the Week –> Evidence Comparison

An additional lecture from the Georgetown Debate Seminar. This is by Bill Batterman and it is on Evidence Comparison. It discusses how different pieces of evidence can be analyzed in order to show how one card is preferable to another based on qualification, time, and warrant comparison. Other lectures from that debate camp can be found here. The lecture is found at the link below.
